Elementary Schools In Palm County Raise Their Grades

Palm Beach County’s Lincoln Elementary and Leadership Academy West had recorded F’s last year. They decided this year that things would be different and that they would make it their mission to improve the education of their students and to help them to learn the way they should. They were happy to report that this year they climbed all the way from F’s to A’s. St. Lucie County’s Weatherbee Elementary went from F’s to B’s as they improved their form of education as well.

Palm Beach was not the only area that has been A-rated. Both Broward and Orange county school districts have reached this goal. Many of the schools that received the F-rating would not let themselves be discouraged with the F-rating - but used it as a motivation to improve.

Lincoln Elementary Principal Jo Anne Rogers said, “You gotta keep on moving,” she said. “You can’t let something keep you down. You can fall down, but you don’t have to stay down.”

Rogers credited a combination of sheer determination and long hours for improving the school’s grade. Teachers worked for two months last summer and six Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the school year to prepare lessons. Students attended tutoring sessions before school and on weekends.
